Boot Camp Workouts: Are They Right for You?

Boot camp workouts are a great opportunity to get outside, build strength and endurance, and be active in the community! But, you'll want to make sure you know what you're getting into before signing up.

What is a boot camp workout?

Boot camp workouts are very similar to circuit or station-style workouts.

They both use a mix of familiar bodyweight exercises like squats, burpees, crunches, and pushups. Some exercises or stations will have the option to add weights to the workout for additional strength training.

You'll move quickly from one exercise to the next in a boot camp workout. This helps keep your heart rate up and keeps those calories burning.

The difference between a circuit workout and a boot camp workout is that an instructor or leader calls the shots and motivates the group through it!

What are the benefits of boot camp workouts?

Boot camp workouts put you through a full-body workout that builds endurance and strength fast.

These workouts require little to no special equipment. They can add variety and an extra challenge to your standard workout routine. Plus, they can be cheaper than investing in a personal training program.

A good fitness boot camp will have two things.

  1. A workout that's structured and efficient.
  2. A trainer that is motivational AND provides modifications so everyone (no matter their fitness level) can participate.


If you're new to fitness boot camps, you should avoid classes that are "one size fits all" or advanced exercisers only. Look for boot camps with instructors that can answer questions, are certified trainers, and push you to a healthy limit (instead of to the point of injury.)

Tips for your first boot camp workout

If you're ready to try your first boot camp workout, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind to set yourself up for the best experience.

  1. Most boot camps are held outdoors, so plan for the weather! If it's hot out, make sure you have access to water. If it's cold, dress in layers to help avoid chills at the beginning of class and avoid getting too hot during the actual workout.
  2. Take breaks when you need them. Don't worry about what the person beside you is doing. If you need to slow down or take a break, do it! Boot camps should be a great workout, but you want to stay safe and injury-free too!
  3. Stick around for the cool-down. Stretching and mobility work is great to do already, but after a hard workout, you'll want to take the extra time to cool down to help avoid soreness or injury.
  4. Don't forget to have fun! Boot camp workouts are about giving it your all, but they're also about having fun outside with a group of people working to be a better, healthier version of themselves too.
