Are you curious if you have what it takes to become a group fitness instructor?
Whether you're passionate about fitness, love classes but want to make the workout your own, or want to find a way to positively impact others, becoming a group fitness instructor can be a rewarding and fulfilling career choice!
Getting started is always the hardest part of trying something new. So, we're sharing some essential tips from one of our incredible group fitness instructors, Megan Poupore from Charleston, SC, to help set you up for success in your new group fitness career!
Effective cueing, class pacing, and engaging class delivery are essential skills for a successful group fitness instructor. Take advantage of opportunities to attend classes, observe experienced instructors, and take notes on their teaching techniques.
Megan suggests spending extra time practicing leading classes in your head and utilizing mirrors to refine your form and presentation!
Before you can run to the front of the class and start teaching, you'll need to obtain the right certifications for that class or studio in order to get started!
Choosing the right certification course is crucial! You should research and find the right course that aligns with your interests and teaching goals. Look for programs that provide comprehensive training on exercise physiology, anatomy, class design, and teaching methodologies.
Once you are certified in a modality that you feel is your essence, you will shine - The sky is the limit!
Confidence is key to becoming a successful group fitness instructor. Embrace opportunities to practice teaching, receive feedback, and refine your skills. Remember that every instructor starts somewhere, and it's okay to make mistakes along the way. Use these experiences as learning opportunities to grow and improve your teaching abilities. As you gain confidence in your abilities, your passion for fitness and helping others will shine through in your classes.
Megan says, "You are stronger and better than you may think! Don't be so critical of your every move. We are human and sometimes we make mistakes. Own it! If anything, it makes you more personable with members when you have a "human moment" and can joke about it. They aren't looking for perfection. They are looking for a good leader to guide them through a workout, ideally one that is both fun and challenging!"
As a group fitness instructor, it's essential to prioritize your personal wellness to prevent burnout and maintain your energy levels. Develop a balanced routine that includes regular exercise, proper nutrition, adequate rest, and stress management techniques. Set boundaries to ensure you have time for self-care, family, and other commitments outside of teaching.
Remember that taking care of yourself allows you to show up as your best self for your students!
Megan mentioned that O2 and their Kids Club have been incredibly supportive of her journey as an instructor. "Their flexible scheduling allows me to balance personal wellness, teaching, and family commitments. I'm grateful for the encouragement from the team, making workouts and classes enjoyable. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am today, achieving my fitness, career, and family goals!"
The fitness industry is constantly evolving, with new trends, techniques, and research emerging regularly. Stay informed about the latest developments in fitness and wellness by attending workshops, conferences, and continuing education courses. Seek mentorship from experienced instructors or fitness professionals who can offer guidance and support as you navigate your career journey. Whether it's your full-time career or a fun side hustle, becoming a group fitness instructor is an exciting and rewarding journey full of growth!
