You've probably seen those round marks on your back or shoulders after a cupping session and wondered why some turn out lighter and others are darker.
At O2, we've got Renew Wellness inside our clubs, so members have direct access to licensed physiotherapists who help with recovery, mobility, and overall performance.
Cupping therapy is one of the treatments they offer, and the marks it leaves behind can tell you a lot about what's going on in your body and how it's healing.
What Is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy uses specialized cups placed on the skin to create a gentle vacuum effect. This suction lifts the skin and underlying tissue, which increases blood circulation, helps release muscle tension, and supports your body's natural healing process.
It's a great complement to your training and your recovery routine! You're putting in the work at the gym, and cupping can help your body recover faster so you're ready for your next session.
What Do the Marks Mean?
The circular marks left after cupping show that toxins were released from that area. They can look similar to a bruise, but they're painless. The color of the mark gives insight into blood flow, tension, and overall balance in that part of the body. Like a bruise, the color will fade over the next few days, so it's best to check it on day one for the clearest read.
Here's what each color can tell you:
Shades of Red: Active Circulation
Bright or vibrant red usually means healthy blood flow and good circulation in that area. It shows the treatment increased blood flow, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the tissue.
Dark Purple or Blue: Stagnation
Darker purple or blue marks can point to stagnation or built-up tension in that muscle group. This typically means the treatment helped release that tension and improve blood flow to the area.
Brown: Toxin Release
Brown marks often indicate the release of old, stagnant blood and toxins from deeper tissue. This is common in areas with a history of injury or chronic tightness.
White or Pale: Low Circulation
Lighter or pale marks can suggest that the area had lower energy or circulation before treatment. This color shows the session helped stimulate blood flow and bring warmth back to the area.
