Jul 04, 2026 | Is Your Pelvic Floor Weaker Than You Think? Signs to Look For

Leaking, back pain, core weakness? These could be pelvic floor signs. Discover what to look for and join our FREE summer class series at O2 Fitness Clubs.

You sneeze, or maybe you laugh a little too hard, and then suddenly you're rushing to the bathroom. Maybe it's been happening so long that you've convinced yourself this is just "normal" (especially after having kids or getting older). But here's the truth: a weak pelvic floor is not something you just have to live with. And it might be affecting you in ways you haven't even connected to this group of muscles yet.

At O2 Fitness Clubs, we believe every part of your health deserves attention (including the parts you don't always talk about). That's why we're focusing on one of the most overlooked muscle groups in the body: the pelvic floor.

What Is Your Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that form a hammock-like base at the bottom of your pelvis. These muscles support your bladder, bowel, and uterus (in women), help control bladder and bowel function, play a major role in sexual health, and stabilize your spine and hips during movement.

Think of your pelvic floor as the foundation of your core. When it's strong and functioning well, you don't even notice it. When it's not, your whole body can feel the negative effects.

Signs Your Pelvic Floor May Be Weaker Than You Think

Many people are surprised to learn that pelvic floor dysfunction shows up in a wide variety of symptoms. Here are some of the most common signs to watch for:

1. Leaking When You Sneeze, Laugh, Cough, or Exercise

This is called stress urinary incontinence, and while it's incredibly common, it is not normal. If you find yourself leaking urine during physical activity, high-impact exercise, or even just a good belly laugh, your pelvic floor muscles may not be providing enough support.

2. Lower Back Pain That Won't Go Away

Because the pelvic floor is so deeply connected to your core and spinal stability, weakness in this area can directly contribute to chronic lower back pain. If you've been stretching and strengthening your back without relief, your pelvic floor may be your why.

3. Hip and SI Joint Pain

The pelvic floor, hip muscles, and sacroiliac (SI) joint all work together as a unit. Weakness or a strength imbalance in the pelvic floor can cause compensation in the hips and pelvis, leading to pain and discomfort during everyday movement or exercise.

4. Difficulty Connecting to Your Core

Ever notice that no matter how many planks or crunches you do, your core still doesn't feel strong? Your core is not just your abs. It's a pressure system made up of your diaphragm, deep abdominals, back muscles, AND your pelvic floor. If one part is weak or disconnected, the whole system suffers.

5. Constipation or Difficulty Emptying Your Bladder Fully

Pelvic floor dysfunction doesn't only show up as leaking. Difficulty with bowel movements or feeling like you can't fully empty your bladder can also indicate that these muscles are too tight or poorly coordinated.

Who Is At Risk?

While pelvic floor dysfunction can affect anyone, certain life events and factors increase your risk:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth

  • Postpartum recovery at any stage whether you gave birth recently or years ago
  • Menopause and hormonal changes

  • High-impact exercise (running, jumping, heavy lifting without proper technique)

  • Chronic constipation or straining

  • Being overweight

  • Aging

  • Previous pelvic or abdominal surgery

But here's what surprises many people: people who are consistently active are not immune. In fact, women who train intensely without proper pelvic floor awareness are at a significantly higher risk of developing dysfunction over time.

The Good News: Your Pelvic Floor Can Get Stronger!

The pelvic floor responds to training just like any other muscle group. With the right guidance, awareness, and exercises, most people see significant improvement in their symptoms and their overall movement quality.

This is not about just doing some Kegel exercises, either. True pelvic floor fitness involves learning to coordinate breath, pressure, and movement in a way that supports your body from the inside out.
